Student Health and Counseling Center

What to Expect

Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) offers a safe place for you to express your thoughts, feelings and concerns.

Sometimes not knowing what to expect can stop us from reaching out. Attending your first counseling appointment is similar to attending your first doctors appointment.

  1. You'll be asked to fill out an assessment to gather information about your current mental health status and history.
  2. You will discuss with a counselor what brought you to counseling and any symptoms you may be experiencing.
  3. The counselor will provide a summary of treatment options available and work with you to come up with a plan. Usually this would involve a combination of group and individual counseling.
  4. Put your plan into action, keeping in mind that you always have the option to alter the plan, change your counselor, or discontinue counseling if your goals have been met or an alternative treatment is available.

Counseling appointments are typically 50 minutes.

Students have the option of participating in counseling sessions via Zoom or in person.
