COVID-19 Updates

Important Information About Zoom Login and Authentication

July 16, 2021

Greetings Faculty, Staff and Students,

On August 2nd, the University will be enabling authentication for all Zoom meetings and webinars. This will require all users to have a current Fresno State email account and also be logged-in via the campus portal in order to host or attend any Zoom meetings. This applies to all faculty, staff and students.

Authentication is the process of identifying users that request access to a system or network, in this case Zoom. If a participant does not have a Fresno State Zoom account or they have not been granted access to a meeting by the host, they will not be able to join the meeting or webinar.

Once authentication is enabled, a meeting host can allow exceptions for guests to join. For example, a faculty member hosting a Zoom session can create an exception to allow a guest lecturer to join the meeting from another institution or outside organization. See our FAQ page for more.

What exactly will happen on August 2nd?
All pre-existing and future Zoom meetings/webinars will require all hosts and participants to be signed in via the Fresno State Zoom portal (https://fresnostate.zoom.us). Instructions on how to properly sign in to Zoom may be found here

Why is authentication being enabled?
Requiring attendees to authenticate will make all Zoom meetings more secure and virtually eliminate disruptions like "Zoom Bombing" or other types of unwarranted behavior that has been experienced over the last year. Authentication also provides a host with an attendee's true Fresno State first and last name in the meeting participants list.

Need help or have questions?
Additional information, instructions and reminders will be provided in the weeks ahead as we approach August 2. Our team is developing an FAQ page to address common questions and concerns and would appreciate your input. Please send your questions to zoomadmin@mail.fresnostate.edu. Communication updates will also be posted to our TS System Status Page.

Thank you for your patience as we implement these important changes.

Sincerely,

Technology Services
