Apply to a Credential Program


Admission Process

  • Completed credential program applications are processed in the order they are received throughout the application period.
  • Applicants that have met all admission requirements will be admitted on a first-come-first-served basis, space permitting.
  • Incomplete program applications will not be processed.
  • We recommend that anyone preparing to apply for the current or next admission cycle attend an information session with our advisors.

Prerequisites, Degree and GPA Admission Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree from a regionally-accredited university or 90 units towards a blended Liberal Studies degree or integrated program from Fresno State.
  • A GPA of 2.67 or higher overall or 2.75 or higher in the last 60 units. (If you do not meet this requirement, you still have an opportunity for admission by completing a Special Consideration Form and attaching it with your application.)
  • Single Subject applicants: refer to the Single Subject Admissions Process Guide for prerequisite information.

Applications Required

Before applying to a credential program, applicants must first apply to Fresno State.

Step 1. Fresno State Application (Cal State Apply)

All applicants must first apply to Fresno State for the same semester that you intend to start the credential program.

Exceptions are made if: 

  • You are a current Fresno State Master's degree (post baccalaureate) student.
  • You will still be a Fresno State undergraduate starting the credential program.

Step 2. Credential Program Application

2-3 business days after submitting your Fresno State application, your credential program application should be available in your Fresno State Portal.

  • You must have a Fresno State student ID number before applying.
  • You must apply during an open application period.
  • You must complete both pages of the program application.
  • You must upload all 12 admission requirements (attachments) to move your application to complete status.
    • Review the Required Credential Program Application Attachments menu below for more information regarding each attachment.
    • Attachments remain in your electronic student file and should not be attached again if they are still current.
    • If you need to return to the attachment page, re-enter the term on the first page of your application.
    • If a document needs to be detached, email kremencredapp@mail.fresnostate.edu.
    • Incomplete applications will not be processed.
Credential Program Application Instructions


Required Credential Program Application Attachments

 
Provide one of the following options:
  1. Verification of passing all three subtests of the California Basic Educational Skills Test (CBEST).
  2. An official score report that verifies passing the College Board SAT Reading or Verbal (500) and SAT Mathematics (550) if test taken before March 2016.
  3. An official score report that verifies passing the College Board SAT Reading and Writing (560) and SAT Mathematics (570) if test taken after March 2016.
  4. An official score report that verifies passing the ACT English (22) and ACT Mathematics (23)
  5. Verification of passing the California Subject Examination for Teachers (CSET): Writing Skills exam and CSET: Multiple Subject exam
  6. Verification of a score of 3 or higher on the AP English Language and Composition or the AP English Literature and Composition Exam and a score of 3 or higher on the AP Calculus or Statistics Exam
  7. An approved BSR Evaluation Request Form verifying approved coursework or combination of coursework and exams.
    • Friday, March 22, 2024 is the last day to submit an audit request for the Summer and Fall 2024 application period.
 

Refer to your teacher credential program’s table and choose the required attachment based on your demonstration of subject matter competency.


Multiple Subject and/or Dual Credential

1 Multiple Subject and Dual applicants that have a bachelor's degree in Liberal Studies, Liberal Arts or Elementary Education from a regionally accredited institution approved by the CTC. Attach unofficial transcripts with your application.

Education Specialist Credential
Option Demonstration of Subject Matter Competency Required Attachment
1 Education Specialist applicants that have a bachelor's degree in Liberal Studies, Liberal Arts or Elementary Education from a regionally accredited institution approved by the CTC, or a major in one of the subject areas in which the commission credentials candidates. Attach unofficial transcripts with your application.
2 Education Specialist applicants that have passed CSETs. Attach a copy of all subject matter CSET test scores. (Click here to review registration and test information for the Multiple Subjects CSET.)

Single Subject Credential

Single Subject academic area advisors will determine if applicants are subject matter competent. Their determination will be documented on the admission interview form.

Option Demonstration of Subject Matter Competency Required Attachment
1 Single Subject applicants who possess a bachelor's degree and who are graduates of a State-approved Subject Matter Preparation Program at Fresno State. Attach the Single Subject Admission Interview Form and  unofficial transcripts with your application.
2 Single Subject applicants who possess a bachelor's degree and who are graduates of a State-approved Subject Matter Preparation Program from other California Institutions. Attach the Single Subject Admission Interview Form and an original subject matter competency verification letter from your school.
3 Single Subject applicants that have passed CSETs. Attach the Single Subject Admission Interview Form and a  copy of all subject matter CSET test scores. (Click here to review registration and test information for the CSET options for your subject matter area.)
4 Single Subject applicants that have met the SMC requirement with coursework or a combination of coursework and exams. Attach the Single Subject Admission Interview Form and appropriate academic subject matter coursework/combination form and/or transcripts.

  • Attach a copy of your certificate of clearance. Do not attach live scan forms or receipts.

Complete the Pre-Program Experience Form and select one option for meeting the requirement:

  • Successfully completed EHD 50 at Fresno State
  • Successfully completed an equivalent course
  • Pre-Program Field Experience Verification (no units on transcript)

Two current (within 1 year) recommendations are required. It is recommended (but not required) that at least one of the recommendation forms is completed by an instructor/faculty in your subject area and the other can be someone who knows you personally or professionally.

  • If your recommendation is emailed to the admissions analyst, you must attach a statement indicating this as attachment 5. 
  • If you were accepted to the FUSD Teacher Residency Program (Summer start only), upload a memo from FUSD stating that your letters of recommendation were received by FUSD.

Two current (within 1 year) recommendations are required. It is recommended (but not required) that at least one of the recommendation forms is completed by an instructor/faculty in your subject area and the other can be someone who knows you personally or professionally.

  • If your recommendation is emailed to the admissions analyst, you must attach a statement indicating this as attachment 6.
  • If you were accepted to the FUSD Teacher Residency Program (Summer start only), upload a memo from FUSD stating that your letters of recommendation were received by FUSD. 

Complete the interview forms listed for your credential program, then schedule and complete an admission interview with faculty.

Contact your appropriate Academic Department Coordinator/Advisor during their respective office hours.

 

Submit current and completed TB Risk Assessment form signed and stamped by the Fresno State Student Health Center, a private physician, or an appropriate State of CA health agency. Page 1 and page 3 of the assessment need to be uploaded as one attachment.

The Fresno State Student Health Center TB risk assessment form is also acceptable. If you contact them for an appointment, be sure to request a consultation for a TB risk assessment.

Other medical clearance forms and TB test result forms will not be accepted.

Complete Mandated Reporters Training for “School Personnel”. 

  • Visit this website
  • Complete General Training and then Complete School Personnel Training  
  • Attach the School Personnel completion certificate with your application.

Keep a copy of the certificate for your own records. Mandated Reporter Training is valid for two years. General training does not need to be repeated when renewing your certificate.

Select the appropriate advising plan for your credential program. Fill out any fields requesting your name, Fresno State ID, start term, and/or signature. Attach the completed advising plan and keep a copy for your reference.

  • Start dates vary by subject matter area.
  • Advising Plan: Single Subject
    • Upload a blank advising form with your program application.
    • After admission to the credential program, advising plans are filled out during a mandatory orientation and signed by the single subject program coordinator.

Teacher Residency Credential Programs

Read and initial each statement. Attach the completed teacher candidate statement.

  1. Attach unofficial transcripts to verify undergraduate degree, GPA, and completion or enrollment in prerequisite courses.
  2. Attach unofficial transcripts indicating a U.S. Constitution course passed with a ‘C’ or better, or verification that you have passed a U.S. Constitution exam.
    • Passing a U.S. Constitution course or exam is not an admission requirement, but will be required if you apply for an internship and at the time of application for your state preliminary credential.

Special Consideration Request Form

Special Consideration Request Form should be attached to your credential application if your admission GPA is too low or if you are returning to a credential program after a break of one or more semesters.

Course Substitution

To request a course substitution, complete the appropriate form for your credential program. This form does not need to be attached to your credential application.
