Chemical Spills

Spills that produce toxic fumes (examples: ammonia hydroxide, hydrochloric acid)

  1. Leave immediately.
  2. Lock the door and place a sign on the door warning of spill.
  3. Label the sign as to contents of spill.
  4. Inform lab technician.
  5. If the lab technician is not present call police x8-2132. Chemical Spill Signs can be found by the first aid kit in the hallway.

Small spills (less than 100 ml)

  1. Wear goggles, apron and gloves.
  2. Pour enough vermiculite on spill to soak up liquid.
  3. Use dust pan and brush to pick up vermiculite.
  4. Place vermiculite in spill waste container.
  5. Wipe area with paper towels and place in spill waste container.
  6. Place spill waste container in fume hood and turn on fume hood.
  7. Label spill waste container as to contents.
  8. Inform technician of spill. Note: Spill control materials can be found just outside of the Digestion room (Rm 16).

Large Spills (greater than 100 mls)

  1. Place signs and barriers to warn others of the spill.
  2. Pour vermiculite around the perimeter of the spill.
  3. Put a chair infront of spill and tape a chemical spill sign to it. Place a chair behind spill if needed and place sign on chair.
  4. Label the sign as to contents of spill.5.Lock the door and place a sign on the door warning of spill.
  5. Label the sign as to contents of spill.
  6. Inform lab technician
  7. If the lab technician is not present, call police x8-2132. Note: Spill control materials can be found just outside of the Digestion room (Rm 16).
