Thesis: Independent Research Project

As part of the M.S. degree, students work with a faculty member to identify and undertake an independent research project. This culminates in the written thesis and an oral thesis defense at a departmental seminar. For most students, the research experience is the highlight of the degree program.

Our department is strongly committed to developing and mentoring student researchers, and a number of our faculty have received awards for their research and mentoring activities. Many of our students have the opportunity to present their research at professional meetings and publish their work in leading scientific journals.
