After about an eight year hiatus, the Department of Recreation Administration reinstated the Recreation Therapy program in 2012 and the number of students have doubled since the first cohort.
Students can complete internships in California and beyond. Recent placement examples include UCLA Resnick Neuropsychiatric Institute in Los Angeles, The City of Hope in Duarte, CA, and Sutter Center for Psychiatry in Sacramento. Students complete pre-internship hours at area agencies such as Central California Adaptive Sports Center, Valley Children's Adaptive Sports Programs, Community Behavioral Health, Veteran's Administration- Central California Healthcare System, and Clovis Unified School District. Students graduate with eligibility to apply for both national (National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification) and state (California Board of Recreation and Park Certification) certification.
Typical job placements include the California Department of Corrections, Department of Mental Health, psychiatric, rehabilitation, and veteran’s affairs hospitals.
The Department has created the 'Play it Forward' fund, seeking support from alumni and the community to donate money to assist students in paying for certification application fees. The Department sponsors the annual Central California Therapeutic Recreation Symposium to provide professional development opportunities for recreation therapists and students. The symposium celebrated its 20th year in 2016. Participants earn CEU credit for attending the symposium.
