Tulare Teen Pregnancy Prevention Initiative

As part of the Teen Pregnancy Prevention Initiative (TPPI), the Office of Adolescent Health (OAH) partnered with the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to reduce teenage pregnancy and address disparities in teen pregnancy and birth rates. The purpose of this program is to demonstrate the effectiveness of innovative, multi-component, community-wide initiatives in reducing rates of teen pregnancy and births in communities with the highest rates, with a focus on reaching African American and Latino/Hispanic youth aged 15–19.

In 2010, Tulare Community Health Clinic received a five-year grant to implement an evidence-based replication of RTR teen pregnancy prevention program in the cities of Tulare and Alpaugh, California.

The Central Valley Health Policy Institute at Fresno State University serves as the evaluator. In addition, some of our Fresno State Public Health graduate students are serving as facilitators for curriculum implementation.

We collected Data for Year 4 at baseline (pre-test), after the curriculum was implemented (Post-test), and at one-year follow-up. We also monitored fidelity through observations and reviewing facilitators’ self-evaluation logs.
