SE Asian Youth

The Central California Children’s Institute (CCCI) received a grant from the Lucile Packard Foundation for Children’s Health to implement a youth data improvement project that will enhance our capacity to better understand education, health, socioeconomic and safety disparities among Southeast Asian youth ages 5-18 years in Fresno County. This initiative expanded on the current work of the CCCI to promote applied research, policies and practices that support well-being of children and families in the San Joaquin Valley.

The purpose of the project was three-fold:

1) to analyze and report on the new Asian subpopulation enrollment data being collected by Fresno Unified School District (FUSD),

2) to enhance awareness of the importance of collecting gender-specific data among Asian subpopulations and other racial/ethnic groups, and

3) to report combined findings from focus groups with Southeast Asian boys and men and the newly collected enrollment data to inform efforts to better engage parents of Asian descent in their child’s education.

“Demystifying the model minority: The important of disaggregating subgroup data to promote success for Southeast Asian youth” that underscored the need for Asian ethnic subgroup data.
