January 7-13, 2013
The beginning of the new semester is upon us. Fortunately, I believe we can begin this semester with a brighter outlook than the past five years. The Governor's budget proposal appears to end the state's disinvestment in higher education, which we have experienced the past several years. However, the proposal suggests that there will not be a restoration of the previous reductions and that we must not expect significant infusion of new dollars.

Congratulations to Provost Bill Covino who has been elected to serve on the American Association of Teacher Educators (AACTE) Board.

I had the opportunity to review the work of the Smittcamp Family Honors College students this semester. They have completed several very significant community service activities this fall. This is an amazing group of students who make major contributions to our university community.
Monday, January 7
My meetings and activities included:
  • Convened meeting of the Cabinet at which the items discussed included ADA language for event announcements, a review of safety and crime data presented by Chief David Huerta, a review of the campus closure during the winter break, discussion of planning for future campus emergencies, a review of the new Executive Order on Mandatory Reporting of Child Abuse and Neglect, and a review of the 2011-13 budget status.
  • Vice President Cynthia Teniente-Matson on several Administrative Services items.
  • Attended Fresno Rotary Club meeting.
  • Athletics Director Thomas Boeh regarding Athletics items.

  • I left Fresno early in the morning to fly to Los Angeles to attend a seminar sponsored by the 20 Million Minds Foundation to discuss Rebooting California Higher Education. The seminar focused on online education and included participants from the private sector as well as public higher education. I was asked to discuss Cal State Online (CSO) and its role for the future. In addition, there was discussion about massive open online courses (MOOC) and several other private sector approaches. The seminar was developed in response to Gov. Jerry Brown's desire to use online education in the future. I will be discussing much of the content of the seminar in my "Last Lecture" sponsored by TILT on January 14.
