October 29-November 4, 2012

This has been a busy week with election activities intensifying. I hope everyone has made arrangements to vote on Tuesday.

More than 150 Fresno State students, staff and faculty participated in Make a Difference Day projects at Fine Gold Creek Preserve, Rotary Storyland and Romain Park on Oct. 27. Thank you to everyone who participated.

Monday, October 29
Among the activities of the day were:

  • Annual American Association of State Colleges and Universities conference in New Orleans.
  • Served on a panel addressing the issues of affordability and competitiveness.
  • Chaired meeting of the AASCU Policy and Purposes committee.
Tuesday, October 30

  • Spent the entire morning on a conference call for the NCAA Board of Directors meeting.
  • Attended sessions at the AASCU conference.
  • Returned to Fresno in the evening.
Wednesday, October 31

  • Completed a live telephone interview with KMJ regarding Proposition 30.
  • Interviewed a candidate for the Associate Athletics Director position.
  • Convened Mobile Strategy Committee and gave members their charge.
  • Phone interview concerning Proposition 30 with a reporter from the California
  • Advocate newspaper.
  • Joined Dean Bob Harper for lunch with a major gift prospect.
  • Conference call with the Investment Committee of the California HealthCare Foundation.
  • Interview with ABC30 concerning Proposition 30.
  • Taped a video segment for the Children's movement concerning Fresno Unified's Race to the Top application.
  • ACE Fellow Dr. Jody Hironaka-Juteau and Provost William Covino.
  • Collegian interview concerning Proposition 30.
  • Conference call concerning Cal State Online.
  • Provost Covino concerning several Academic Affairs matters.
  • Sharon and I attended dinner with two University friends and supporters.
Thursday, November 1

  • Vice President Paul Oliaro to discuss several Student Affairs matters.
  • Photo shoot for the annual University holiday card.
  • Video conference with members of the Presidential Oversight Committee for the CSU Water Initiative. Director David Zoldoske reviewed the progress of the initiative and reported that 25 faculty from 11 campuses had received release time awards to develop grant proposals. The second group of 50 interns is currently being selected. There were several other items being addressed.
  • Spoke to the Craig School's Community Partners luncheon.
  • Vice President Oliaro and student leaders to discuss the University's proposed technology plan, the election, proposed fees to be discussed at the November Board of Trustees meeting and several other issues.
  • Vice-President Cynthia Teniente-Matson and Associate Vice-President Debbie Astone to discuss several Auxiliary Services matters.
  • Representatives from the Latino Mayor's Coalition to discuss several issues regarding faculty recruitment, professional development programs for Latino faculty and staff and several other issues.
  • Congressman Jim Costa and several community leaders to discuss funding opportunities for the Fresno Strategic Initiatives project.
Friday, November 2

  • Hosted meeting of the Fresno Compact Board of Directors. Compact expressed pleasure that all four of our local school districts would be submitting Race to the Top grant applications.
  • Final meeting of the Campaign Leadership Committee. It was a great meeting as we reviewed the progress of the campaign and reflected on the change that has occurred with momentum towards philanthropy. Special thanks to founding co-chairs Jan and Bud Richter and to current co-chairs Dennis Woods and Omel Nieves.
  • Vice-President Teniente-Matson to discuss several Administrative Services initiatives.
  • Attended fifth year anniversary celebration for the Jan and Bud Richter Center for Community Engagement and Service-Learning.
  • Cabinet at which the issues discussed included a report from the recent CSU Executive Council meeting, budget planning for 2013-14 and Administrative Roundtable agenda.
  • Conference call with members of the California HealthCare Foundation staff to discuss a meeting on campus to share the results of a survey on health care completed by the foundation’s director.
  • Hosted Fresno Pacific University President Pete Menjares, his wife Virginia and several friends of Fresno State and Fresno Pacific for the men’s basketball game between our two universities. It was an entertaining evening.
Saturday, November 3

  • Commissioner Craig Thompson of the Mountain West Conference to discuss upcoming BCS Presidential Oversight Committee meeting.
  • Attended and spoke at the Fresno State Alumni Association Board meeting.
  • Attended several tailgates before the football game.
  • Hosted friends and supporters of the College of Arts and Humanities and Kremen School for the Fresno State vs. Hawaii football game. Congratulations to Coach Tim DeRuyter, his staff and the team for a big victory. Congratulations to Director David Fullmer and his staff for a great Band Day event.
Sunday, November 4

  • Brunch with relatives who were visiting from Sacramento and Pittsburgh.
  • Joined two friends and University supporters for dinner.
  • Worked on preparing for a new week.
