Professor emeritus of Biology Keith Harris Woodwick died in Fresno, California on November 1, 2016. Dr. Woodwick was born in Tappen, North Dakota on January 4, 1927, and went on to earn his Bachelor’s degree from Jamestown College, a Master’s degree from the University of Washington; and his Ph.D. from the University of Southern California.

Keith’s disciplinary expertise was primarily in marine Invertebrate zoology. As a professor of Biology at Fresno State from 1955 – 1994, he taught and mentored generations of undergraduate and graduate students, many of who went on to successful careers as scientists, doctors, dentists, teachers, and professors. During his time in the department, he served as chair, was awarded many research grants, and was one of the founding members and chairperson of the Moss Landing Marine Laboratories. In 1987 Keith was honored as Fresno State’s Outstanding Professor. In Keith’s own words, “The enthusiasm of students as they learn, the thrill of shared research progress and the eventual success of students in the academic, professional, and business worlds, these are the real rewards of a teacher.”

Keith is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Betty; daughter Colleen Torgerson, and husband Paul Beare; son Kevin Woodwick, and wife Diane Hanson; and daughter Kelli Woodwick; his grandchildren, Kennan Torgerson, and wife Katie; Gavin Torgerson; Landon Woodwick; and Aidan Woodwick-Richards; great-granddaughter, Riley; and his nieces Nancy, Pamela, Debbi and their families. Keith was preceded in death by his parents, Lottie and Louie, and his brother Donald.

Remembrances to Keith Woodwick can be given to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) or the Ocean Conservancy organization. A Celebration of his Life will be held at 1:00 PM on Sunday, November 20th, 2016 at the Fresno State Smittcamp Alumni House.
