President's Reflections August 27 – September 3

Our campus experienced a painful tragedy this weekend with the death of freshman Philip Dhanens. Our entire University community is impacted by this heartbreak. I hope everyone will commit to learning from this terrible tragedy and make changes ensuring this will not happen again.

My deepest sympathy is extended to Philip's family and friends and our thoughts and prayers are with them at this most difficult time.

Monday, August 27

My meetings and activities included:

• Cabinet, at which the issues addressed included 2012-13 enrollment, a report from the CSU Executive Council meeting, the Oct. 8 campus budget forum and Administrative Roundtable agenda.

• Vice-President Paul Oliaro to discuss Student Affairs matters.

• Provost William Covino to discuss Academic Affairs matters.

• Vice-President Cynthia Teniente-Matson to discuss Administrative Services matters.

• Attended press event announcing support for Proposition 31.

• Call with Cal State Online Executive Director Ruth Black.

• Vice-President Peter Smits to discuss Advancement matters.

• Academic Senate Executive Committee meeting.

• Interview with Monitor Institute representatives to discuss a leadership academy in Fresno.

Tuesday, August 28

• Weight of the Nation event sponsored by the Fresno Business Council and Kaiser Permanente. Participated as a member of the panel that addressed obesity issues.

• Conference call regarding the Cal State Online and Pearson kick-off event.

• Conference call with the Nonprofit Leadership Alliance Development Committee.

• Dr. and Mrs. Bud Richter, Provost Covino and Director Chris Fiorentino to provide an annual update on Richter Center activities.

• Athletics Director Thomas Boeh to discuss a number of Athletics matters.

• Former Associated Students, Inc. president and student trustee Jennifer Reimer.

Wednesday, August 29

• Conference call regarding access and revenue distribution issues with the new Bowl Championship Series Playoff system.

• Vice-President Teniente-Matson and Associate Vice-President Debbie Astone to discuss a number of Auxiliary Services matters.

• Fresno Business Council CEO Deb Nankivell and Doug Noll to discuss a community mental health project.

• Provost Covino and Vice-President Teniente Matson to discuss the coordination of various economic development activities.

• Introduced UC Merced Chancellor Dorothy Leland at the Women's Campus Connection luncheon.

• Spoke to the participants in the Central Valley Educational Leadership Institute Rural Schools Network.

• Visited the Richter Center Volunteer Fair in the Memorial Garden. Great participation!

• Conference call with Vice-Chancellor Gail Brooks and other CSU Presidents serving on the HR Presidential Advisory Committee. Much of the discussion focused on proposed legislation on retirement issues.

• Hosted the Newly Appointed Tenure Track Faculty and Administrators Reception at the University House.

Thursday, August 30

• Senior Campaign Leadership team to discuss several campaign issues and prepare for upcoming events.

• Conference call with Cal State San Marcos President Karen Haynes regarding Cal State Online.

• Associate Vice-President Kent Clark, Dean Vida Samiian and Senior Development Director Lee Ann Jansen to discuss several major campaign prospects.

• Posthumous degree presentation to Phillip Johnson’s family. Phillip tragically died in a drowning accident this summer.

• Department of Art and Design faculty show.

Friday, August 31

• ACE Fellow Jody Hironaka-Juteau.

• Videoconference interviews for the CSU Ag Research Initiative executive director position.

• Conference call with former Fresno State administrator to discuss career plans.

Saturday, September 1

• Received early morning call regarding student Philip Dhanens who was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

• Continued to monitor Philip’s health condition and spoke with staff regarding follow-up.

• Worked on preparation for the coming week

Sunday, September 2

• Played in golf tournament with Sharon.

• Conference call with staff regarding the student death.

• Joined our son Bryan and daughter-in-law Kim for dinner.

Monday, September 3

• Played in second day of golf tournament.

• Joined friends for Labor Day picnic.
