REFLECTIONS FROM THE PRESIDENT

April 29 – May 5, 2013

This has been a busy week as we completed the final full week of classes.

Congratulations to Vice-President Paul Oliaro who recently received the Chancellor's award for his work with the system alcohol policy and practices effort. He has been a great leader for both our campus and the system in this regard.

Our thoughts and prayers are with our colleagues at CSU Channel Islands who had to evacuate the campus due to fires that surrounded their university.

Monday, April 29
My meetings and activities included:
  • Cabinet, at which issues addressed included a report from the Council of Presidents, proposed online education legislation, business continuity plan update, STAR Day, and a presentation from our REAL team regarding financial literacy.
  • Vice President Oliaro regarding several Student Affairs items.
  • Provost William Covino regarding Academic Affairs items.
  • Vice President Cynthia Teniente-Matson regarding several Administrative Services and Information Technology items.
  • Dean Andrew Hoff, Associate Dean Jody Hironaka-Juteau, Development Director Dana Lucka, Assistant to the President Michelle Nelson and Executive Coordinator of Events Rosie Tapia to review plans for awarding an honorary doctorate at the Health and Human Services Honors Convocation and Reception on May 10.
  • Interviewed a candidate for Craig School of Business Dean’s position.
  • Professor Emeritus Sudarshan Kapoor regarding a potential campus visit from the Ambassador to India.
  • Academic Senate Executive Committee.
  • Attended meeting of the Academic Senate.
  • Attended and spoke at the Club Sports year-end reception.

Tuesday, April 30
  • Professor Victor Torres and Ms. Tapia to discuss a benefit event in honor of Ernesto Martinez.
  • Director Leticia Cano regarding discussion of a donor.
  • Opening of the Renaissance Group Executive Committee.
  • Conference call regarding Cal State Online.
  • Academic Senate Chair Lynn Williams to discuss Senate items.
  • Attended recognition luncheon sponsored by Campus Ministry leaders.
  • Renaissance Board Chair John Counts, his wife and Executive Director Michael Giovannetti to discuss the Renaissance Group and conference plans for next year.
  • Videotaped a welcome for Renaissance Scholars event.
  • Dean Luz Gonzalez to discuss her work with the Center for Recruitment and Retention of Underrepresented Faculty, Staff, and Administrators.
  • Dr. Hironaka-Juteau and Vice-President Teniente-Matson regarding implementation of the Diversity Plan.
  • Hosted the Service Recognition Reception at the University House. More than 150 students, faculty, staff and community representatives were honored for their commitment to community service and service-learning. I was humbled by the announcement of a new $2,500 scholarship to be awarded in my name for excellence in community service.

Wednesday, May 1
  • Flew to Indianapolis to attend the NCAA Board of Directors meeting.
  • Conference call with WASC Eligibility Review Committee to discuss initial application by the California Health Sciences University.

Thursday, May 2
  • NCAA Division I Board of Directors meeting in Indianapolis.
  • Returned to Fresno late Thursday evening.

Friday, May 3
  • Fresno Compact Board of Directors meeting.
  • Vice President Teniente-Matson and Associate Vice President Debbie Astone to discuss several Auxiliary items.
  • Dr. Richard Whitten to discuss medical education issues in the Valley.
  • Dr. Hironaka-Juteau regarding her ACE Fellowship.
  • Travelled to Shaver Lake to speak to the Irvine New Leadership Network to discuss community transformation and engagement of the University with the region.
  • Spoke at the annual Turf Day dinner at the Madera Country Club.

Saturday, May 4
  • Continued the packing process at the University House.
  • Children’s Hospital Central California annual Derby Days event.

Sunday, May 5
  • Spent more time packing.
  • Attended a reception at the Newman Center in my honor.
