“Cal Poly Library of Pyroprints:
a trans-curricular program in molecular forensics”

Christopher L. Kitts, Ph.D.
Professor and Chair, Biological Sciences Department
Director, Center for Applications in Biotechnology
Cal Poly State University, San Luis Obispo

The Cal Poly Library of Pyroprints is a trans-curricular program for collecting molecular fingerprints of E. coli from known hosts. The program incorporates an active, large-scale, multi-disciplinary research project into multiple classes across curricula in three departments. Students from Freshman to Master’s level are involved in collecting E. coli, fingerprinting them using a novel method called “pyroprinting,” and building and operating a database that compares fingerprints and constructs strain-level classifications to aid in identifying the sources of fecal contamination in the environment.
