Barriers, Pathways, & Bridges: Guidance toward higher thinking

The roads traveled by neurons and axons are challenged by
the complex dynamics of the developing nervous system.
Their destinations are dependent upon pioneers, guideposts,
and a permissive environment. Consequently, when these
destinations are derailed, a wide range of neuropathological
diseases arise including: Autism Spectrum Disorders,
epilepsy, cerebral palsy, and severe intellectual disabilities.
As a result, the study of neuron migration and axon guidance
in the cerebral cortex remains an area of great interest in
developmental neurobiology and childhood neurology. In this
seminar I will summarize, by the studies of genetically altered
animal models, newly identified molecules necessary to
navigate the complex barriers, pathways and bridges of the
cerebral cortex. In addition, I will discuss the guidance and
journey of attaining an advanced degree leading toward
“higher thinking”.
