To his credit, incoming CSU Chancellor Timothy P. White gets that messaging and symbolism matter. He took it upon himself to request a 10% pay cut from the $421,500 a year that his predecessor Charles Reed is getting to lead the 23-campus system. While White's $380,000 salary (plus $30,000 supplement from CSU foundations) will still be a nice bump from the $327,000 he received as chancellor of UC Riverside, it shows he's learned that during hard times, leaders have to set a good example.

Darren Johnson, Ed Lund and Max Orendorf opened Fulton Cycle Works in September, renting space that adjoins the Fulton Brewing Co. at 1243 Fulton Mall, between Merced and Fresno streets. "No one's expecting to get rich on it," said Lund, an art curator at Fresno City College and Fresno State. "We're just doing it because we love it."

Engineering and business students qualify for international competition

The road to the big challenge, where Kansas City area students will compete against teams from around the world, including China and Denmark, began this past week when engineering and business students from the University of Kansas, the University of Missouri and Rockhurst University beat out teams from Fresno State and Purdue University.
