High school senior Taciana Fields was taking advantage of a quiet campus this Veterans Day holiday to take a tour of Fresno State. She and her mother say they were happy to see Proposition 30 pass last week because it meant tuition wouldn't go up at CSU campuses again this fall.

Valley veterans tell their stories of service and sacrifice

The son of a career Army officer, Paul Troop joined the Navy and became a medic. During his second hitch in Vietnam, he was a medevac corpsman assigned to the Marines and assisted in helicopter evacuations of wounded. After leaving the military, he worked for the Veterans Administration for 36 years. Now living in Modesto, he is working on his master's degree in geology at Fresno State.

Thumbs up to Manuel Olgin, who was awarded the El Fuego Nuevo (the New Flame) award at the Association of Mexican American Educators conference. Olgin, leadership development instructor at the Madera Community College Center, was instrumental in starting the Chicano commencement celebration at Fresno State and is founding president of the Fresno State Chicano Alumni Association, according to Vida en el Valle. He has been an important role model throughout his career.

CSU Proposes Super Senior Fees

“Super Seniors” is a name used for college students who already have enough units to graduate, but are still in school. There are about 9,000 of them currently enrolled in California State Universities. CSU officials have come up with a plan to encourage them to graduate faster, make them pay more.
