At the same time, CSU officials can’t be too obvious. In October, the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association sued Cal State Monterey Bay over an e-mail from humanities professor Ernest Stromberg urging students to vote for Prop. 30. The lawsuit cites the same provision of the state education code that Richmond may have violated in his commencement remarks last spring. Meantime, Cal State Fresno president William Covino sent an e-mail to faculty members last month warning them about using the lecture hall as a political soapbox.

On Thursday, the Children's Movement, a citizen-led, nonpartisan group working to improve the well-being and education of children, released a video encouraging the union to endorse the application. It included statements from Fresno State President John Welty and Fresno County Superior Court Judge David Gottlieb.

The ensemble, founded in 1987 as a graduate-level choir at Fresno State, later became an independent nonprofit performance group. It is devoted to providing professional-level vocal programs, including pieces well beyond the performance ability of the average choral group.
