Fresno State student Oscar Perez will receive Fresno State's 2012 William R. Hearst/California State University (CSU) Trustees Award in a ceremony in Long Beach on Tuesday, Fresno State announced. Perez will be one of 23 students, one from each CSU campus, to be recognized for their academic excellence, community service and other accomplishments despite personal hardships.

This year, Sloan said he expects to have about 300 people working, including students from Fresno State and members of Kiwanis Key Club chapters from Fresno high schools. In scouting out the river for Saturday's cleanup, Sloan said, the group already has its eye on a stretch about two miles upstream from Skaggs Bridge, where about 50 tires have piled up. "And we expect to pull a number of couches and refrigerators out of the river in this cleanup," Sloan added.

The aptly named Jonathan Brilliant takes items found in a coffee shop and turns them into large works of art. His order's almost ready at Fresno State. Not everyone gets a kick from caffeine. The wooden sticks we use to stir our cups of coffee also stir Brilliant's imagination. He explained, "Despite the unconventional materials it's actually a pretty traditional way of weaving, especially in the southeast where I come from."

A young artist at Fresno State is working in an unusual medium to create an ambitious new project. Jonathan Brilliant is known for using coffee sticks to create his sculptures. He's currently working on a piece that incorporates more than 30,000 of the coffee stirrers, but no glue.
