GOP nominee Ryan extols free enterprise in Fresno

Fresno State College Republicans — who staged a counter protest and got into a chanting and shouting match."I don't like Ryan's budget proposal and his idea for Medicare vouchers," said Linda Martinez, a retired teacher who drove to the rally from Woodland, near Sacramento. "I just turned 65. A lot of people behind me will have nothing if his plan goes into effect."Earlier this week, Ryan attended campaign rallies and fundraisers in California and Nevada. He is scheduled to head to fundraisers in Portland, Ore. and Seattle on Monday.

Free ice cream at Fresno State

Fresno State handed out free ice cream samples Tuesday morning at the school's Rue and Gwen Gibson Farm Market -- and plenty of people took advantage of the deal, trying out the black cherry and chocolate fudge brownie flavors. All of the Fresno State ice cream is produced at the school. They make more than 65 flavors, including cake batter with brownie bits, java jolt, and pistachio nut!

California needs to break the mold to save higher education

California's public higher education system, once the envy of the world, is struggling. To survive in a way that continues to fulfill its mission, we need to break the mold on how it operates. State budget cuts have stripped our universities to the bone. And the promise of nearly free, accessible higher education has all but disappeared as cuts have forced tuition increases. What was once a rite of passage for all qualified young people is increasingly becoming untenable for many prospective students.

University to kick off long-term, targeted fundraising campaign

Middle-sized fundraising universities are characterized by having between 5,000 and 10,000 individual donors and between 10 and 20 full-time professional fundraisers. Larger universities, such as Fresno State, Long Beach State and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, have more than 10,000 individual donors and endowments valued at $50 million or above.
