'1984' screening turns focus on Big Brother

There will be a screening of the 1984 film, "1984," on Tuesday, April 4, at the Community Media Access Collaborative offices presented by Fresno State CineCulture. This will be one of 180 screenings across the country in support of the National Endowment for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. Funding for all three would be cut under President Donald Trump's federal budget.

Fresno State students have voted no on a $200 a semester fee to build a new 100,000 square foot student union in the center of campus officials said. The fee hike would not have kicked in until the project was done and the building opened.

I congratulate Tim Sheehan for writing the article, "Fresno State's Economic Impact: Nearly 10,000 jobs, $717 million in spending" (March 28). I am happy to see the positive outcomes that derive from our local California State University being acknowledged. I am a Fresno State student and I strongly believe that education is essential to economic growth in the San Joaquin Valley.

A windy day in the Valley caused a number of power outages and sent trees falling to the ground. PG&E is blaming the wind for more than 130 power outages in the Fresno area impacting 6400 customers. Countless trees fell. Likely the most frightening was a branch that crashed through a window at Fresno State. We're told that a science class was in session at McLane Hall when the window was shattered.

University Women send students to technology event The Modesto/Turlock American Association of University Women will send six girls, all seventh graders from Stanislaus County schools, to Tech Trek at California State University, Fresno, in June. Report shows Fresno State economic impact

Fresno State is a powerful economic driver in the Central Valley, pumping $716.9 million in business sales into the region according to a new report. The study, conducted by the Craig School of Business at Fresno State, measured the economic ripple effect of the university and its auxiliaries on job creation, sales for local firms, generated sales tax and employee and student spending.

Students were asked to approve an annual fee increase of $400 that would not have gone into affect until the new building was open for service â€" an estimated four to five years. The proposed $80 million building would have replaced the current student union, which was built in 1968 and was meant to serve about 10,000 students. Now, the university serves about 24,000.
