State board meeting to discuss California water issues

Speakers at the meeting will explore how "we work together to improve the already strong strides agriculture has taken" in developing on-farm solutions to improve water quality and ground water management, CDFA secretary Karen Ross said in a statement. California State University-Fresno's Center for Irrigation Technology estimates that agriculture uses about 40 percent of dedicated water statewide, with urban and environmental uses making up the balance.

Fresno cyclist Felicia Gomez [Fresno State Professor] won the women's road race in her 40-44 age group Thursday at the USA Cycling Masters Road Nationals in Bend, Ore. Gomez, 42, left her breakaway companion during a rolling section of the 53-mile course and rode solo for the final 10 miles to finish 1 minute, 15 seconds ahead of the field.

Leaders of Fresno State's community of sororities and fraternities announced Thursday afternoon that their organizations are canceling recruiting and social activities this weekend. The announcement comes in the wake of the death of a freshman pledge Sunday after a night of reported heavy drinking at a fraternity party.

Expanded farm market expected to open Spring of 2013

Fans of Fresno State’s agricultural products have something to look forward to early next year—the completion of a new, larger location for the Rue and Gwen Gibson Farm Market. The market was created in 1984 as an outdoor stand to sell produce grown by Fresno State students and has since moved indoors to expand into other university ventures such as dairy, meat, and flowers.

"Much like the rest of the nation, the area is growing at a slow pace," Goss said. "Our survey results indicate that growth will remain positive but weak over the next three to six months."

Beet Energy’s project consultant Jim Tischer of Fresno State said the benefits of turning beets into biofuel are attractive. “We’re talking about a much higher [heat] content with three times the ethanol production per acre compared to corn," Tischer said.
