EDITORIAL: We must learn from death of Fresno State student
(Fresno Bee © 09/06/2012)
The death Sunday of an 18-year-old Fresno State student following a weekend fraternity party is another tragic reminder of the dangers of alcohol abuse among young people. Unfortunately, underage drinking has long been a rite of passage on college campuses. Over the years, Fresno State has discouraged underage drinking, and has aggressively counseled against binge drinking. But the pressures to drink at fraternity parties and off-campus parties too often overwhelm a young person's good sense.

Read the bill

I encourage critics of HR 35 (nonbinding request for UC/CSU to address anti-Semitism on California campuses) to read the legislation. It specifically recognizes the First Amendment, and was the result of more than a year of discussions with all those involved, including the universities. The bill has nothing to do with limiting objectionable political free speech.

Theta Chi was established at Fresno State in 1942, making it the oldest active fraternity at the university. It lost its charter between 2000 and 2002 due to alcohol and other issues, according to a 2004 story in The Collegian, the university's student newspaper.

Index: Valley to continue slow growth
(The Business Journal © 09/05/2012)
The Valley economy’s slow growth is expected to creep at an even more sluggish rate, according to the San Joaquin Valley Business Conditions Index released on Wednesday. The overall index of monthly survey published by the Craig School of Business at Fresno State dropped to 50.6 in the month of August. Although it is a decline from the 51.6 index of July, it’s still above the growth neutral index of 50.
