Learning critical thinking
(Fresno Bee © 08/30/2012)
I really liked reading the Aug. 25 column by Dr. Andrew Fiala. My 21-year-old son is a computer science major at Fresno City College and he has taken two philosophy courses from instructor Kerry Ybarra and two calculus classes. I concur that his critical thinking skills have improved because of the philosophy and math classes.

(Fresno Bee © 08/29/2012)
FYI - California Community College leaders outlined a grim future for the state's largest higher education system, which has been battered by $809 million in cuts and denied access to thousands of would-be students over the past three years. Leaders said even more cuts lie ahead if the governor's November tax measure fails.

Title IX: Penn State could face another legal headache
(Politico.com © 08/29/2012)
But plaintiffs may feel differently. Title IX claims could be attached to civil lawsuits, and judgments in such cases have exploded in recent years. The University of Colorado faced a $2.85 million Title IX verdict stemming from the rape of two students by football recruits and players in 2001, with a court holding the university's program created a dangerous culture for sexual assault. That case stemmed from a single incident and victim; Sandusky was convicted in June of sexually abusing 10 boys. The verdict in a California State University-Fresno Title IX discrimination case ran to $19.1 million, though later reduced to $6.6 million.

E-books gain favor on Valley college campuses
(The Business Journal © 08/29/2012)
Even still, Fresno State and many other California State University campuses are hoping to at least make e-textbooks a more accessible option for students. Earlier this year, the 23-campus CSU system partnered with three e-textbook distributors to provide students with more than 5,000 popular e-textbook titles at prices up to 60 percent off that of new printed editions.

Time Warner Cable SportsNet announced on Tuesday Fresno State will be included in its 2012-13 men’s basketball and football coverage for the Mountain West Conference, but details regarding local airing of the games are still pending.
