Dr. William Rice, a professor of marketing at Fresno State, understands why the gates on the plant are permanently closing. "If you have aa entrepreneur who wants to buy the plant and is willing to leave or have less efficiency in the equipment they'll buy that and probably on an individual case make a profit off of it," Rice explained. "But big corporations cannot when they have inefficiencies of production and aging equipment.

Hoover High holds poetry slam

Organizers say this particular genre of poetry is mean to be political and allow students to voice and share their ideas and experiences. "Something that sounds pleasing to the ear," teacher Kristen Norton said. "There should be rhythm, there should be devices like metaphors or personification that make it separate from just a speech on an issue." Fresno's poet laureate Lee Herrick and Fresno State professor and author Connie Hales served as judges.

Design Science students test themselves in upcoming Academic Decathlon

On Saturday, Design Science will compete against eight other high schools in their new division at the 34th annual Fresno County Academic Decathlon at Fresno State, from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The competition, which will include high schools in other divisions, will continue Feb. 6 at Central High School East's campus from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Thumbs up to Jennifer Alcorn and her bootcamp fitness students, veterans service organization Team AMVETS, for leading 200-plus community members, veterans and families from Campus Pointe shopping center on a walk around Fresno State en mass. The march is intended to raise awareness about veteran suicides. Statistically, 22 veterans take their own lives daily and the group hopes to change that.

Henry R. Perea says he'll run for Fresno mayor

Another compelling storyline is that Perea is trying to do what his son, former Assembly Member Henry T. Perea, couldn't in 2008 when he ran for mayor and lost to Swearengin. Tom Holyoke, a Fresno State political science professor, says the elder Perea is a smart politician who isn't entering the race blindly.
