Ex-Fresno State softball player Laura Berg to be inducted into Olympics Hall of Fame

One of the most accomplished softball players ever to pass through the Fresno area is adding another accolade to her résumé: U.S. Olympics Hall of Famer. Former Fresno State outfielder and assistant coach Laura Berg will be enshrined as a member of the 2004 U.S. squad that captured gold in Athens during one of the most dominant team performances in Olympics history.

Fresno Unified trio on All-State baseball team

Three Central Section representatives made Cal-Hi's 30-man elite team and all came from Fresno Unified, in Sunnyside catcher/pitcher Jose Barraza, Fresno outfielder Anthony Hawkins and Bullard pitcher/first baseman Blake Quinn. Making the second team were Clovis West pitcher/first baseman Tyler Ferguson, Clovis East pitcher/outfielder Isaiah Yates and Centennial's Fresno State-bound infielder, Brody Russell.

Valley Business Index Dips Slightly

For the first time since January, the San Joaquin Valley Business Conditions Index declined in June. However, the index prepared for the Craig School of Business at Fresno State remained above growth neutral 50.0 for the for the fifth straight month, signaling slowly improving regional economic conditions in the short term.

Student seeks help to attend nat’l NAACP conference

Alyssa Smith, who graduated from Madera High School in 2010 and is now a junior at California State University, Fresno, said she needs $2,000 to attend the weeklong leadership conference in Houston. The conference starts Thursday. Smith, who serves as the president of the NAACP branch at Fresno State, plans to attend with Michelle Alexander and Gloria Brown of Madera NAACP #1084 as well as Aleyah Glaster and Aaliyah Alexander of the youth division.

Index: Valley economy continues slow recovery

The Central Valley economy will continue to grow but at a slightly lesser rate, according to the San Joaquin Valley Business Conditions Index released on Monday by the Craig School of Business at Fresno State. The overall index for the month of June was 55.4, down from the 57.7 in July. The index is not a percentage and any score above 50 indicates expected growth over the next three to six months.
