Fresno Community Chorus Master Chorale performs Felix Mendelssohn’s epic oratorio Elijah at Paul Shaghoian Concert Hall under the direction of Anna Hamre, Director of Choral Activities at Fresno State. The Community Chorus is an integral part of the Fresno State Choral Department, meeting each week on the Fresno State campus and including Fresno State students and faculty among its members. Many involved in this performance as chorus members, soloists, or orchestra members are current Fresno State students, graduates from the Fresno State Music Department, and Music Department faculty.

Written by Felix Mendelssohn in 1846, the Elijah oratorio depicts events in the life of the Biblical prophet. In composing intensely dramatic scenes such as the bringing forth of rain to parched Israel through Elijah’s prayers, and the ascension into heaven of Elijah on a fiery chariot, Mendelssohn references Biblical episodes concerning the prophet.

Mendelssohn greatly admired the work of his Baroque predecessors Handel and Bach, and, having organized the first performance of the latter’s St. Matthew Passion since that composer’s death, was influential in bringing it and other of Bach’s works to widespread popularity. Although modeled on the oratorios of these two Baroque masters, the style of the Elijah oratorio reflects Mendelssohn’s own genius as an early Romantic composer. One of music’s most highly regarded oratorios, Elijah has since its composition significantly influenced the history of writing for choirs and orchestras.

This lyric and colorful work will be performed by the Fresno Community Chorus Master Chorale with full professional orchestra. Renowned baritone Jeffrey Snider returns to perform as Elijah with the chorus. Joining him are soloists soprano Sherah Moore, mezzo Terry Estabrook, and tenor Brian Lummis. Chorus and orchestra are directed by Anna Hamre.

The printed program for this concert will include a Veterans Day tribute page. To make a tribute until October 31st, go to the Concerts page of the Fresno Community Chorus website and click on “Make a Veterans Day program tribute.”
