Webinar: Making Your Campus Safe for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ) Students

Date: Thursday, November 15, 2012
Time: Noon
Location: UBC 192

Webinar Overview - A new report entitled 2010: The State of Higher Education for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender People sheds light on the safety situation on campus for LGBTQ students. Dr. Sue Rankin of Penn State completed a 30-year study of LGBTQ safety on college campuses. She found that the truth is that college campuses are not any safer today than 30 years ago for LGBTQ students. Only 7 percent of colleges have resources available for this population despite the fact that we know having a visible and identifiable LGBTQ community with administrative support is key to reducing bullying and violence against LGBTQ students on campus.

Webinar Objectives - Participants will: 1. Learn how to challenge LGBTQ focused violence, 2. Discuss ways to improve the campus climate for LGBTQ students, 3. Explore ally programs and the creation of safe space training, 3. Discover programming efforts that will support creating a safer LGBTQ campus, 4. Learn practical strategies that can be used in day-to-day practice to support the LGBTQ community on campus, 5. Explore the psychological damage for the students individually and collectively.

This event is co-sponsored by the Central Valley Cultural Heritage Institute, the Division of Student Affairs, LGBT+ Allies Network, and the President's Commission on Human Relations and Equity. This is open to Fresno State students, faculty, staff, and administrators. Registration is recommended. Please call the Center for Women and Culture at 278.6946 to register. Feel free to bring your lunch.
