9066: Japanese American Voices from the Inside
Fresno State Madden Library
Poetry Contest

This year marks the 75th anniversary of Executive Order 9066 and the World War II incarceration of Japanese Americans.

Deadline: All entries must be received by April 23, 2017

• Sponsored by James M. Smith, Fresno State Professor Emeritus
• Only one entry per person
• Winners will be announced by May 5, 2017

Any type of poem will be accepted but it must relate in some way to the incarceration of 120,000 Japanese Americans in 1942 or its antecedents or aftermath or what reverberations it has for us today. We can also offer you topic suggestions that might inspire you.

Open to everyone in the following categories. Three winners will be selected in each category.

• Fresno State students

• 6th to 12th graders

• Residents of the San Joaquin Valley
(Fresno, Madera, Kings, Tulare and Mariposa counties)

The following prizes will be given in each category.

1st – $250
2nd – $100
3rd – $50
