The Grammy Award winning and internationally acclaimed all-male chorus Chanticleer performs its 35th anniversary program “A Siren’s Call” in the acoustically superb Paul Shaghoian Performing Arts Center on September 18th. Sponsored by Fresno Community Chorus and the Fresno State Music Department, the program offers a tempting variety of the seductive and irresistible songs of sirens, classical and contemporary, including two world premiere compositions by Chinese composer Chen Yi and Irish composer Michael McGlynn. Based in San Francisco and known around the world as “an orchestra of voices,” the ensemble of 12 is hailed by the New Yorker magazine as “the world’s reigning male chorus” for their tonal beauty and seamless blending of voices ranging from countertenor to bass.

Chanticleer was founded in 1978 by tenor Louis Botto and is currently under the direction of interim music director Jace Wittig. Their 2012-13 season encompasses performances across the United States, including the popular December concerts at St. Ignatius Church in San Francisco and the California missions of Carmel and Santa Clara. In addition to their musical projects, which include the commissioning and premiering of new choral compositions, Chanticleer is noted for its extensive education and outreach programs. With the help of individual and corporate support, the ensemble involves over 5000 young people annually. In 2010, Chanticleer received the Chorus America Education and Outreach Award in recognition of their educational programs.

Under the direction of Dr. Anna Hamre, Fresno Community Chorus enters its 56th year of providing superlative choral music to the Central Valley, recently returning from a tour of England where they participated in the arts festivities leading up to the 2012 Olympic Games. Comprised of the 100-plus member Master Chorale and the smaller chamber ensemble Coro Piccolo, FCC enjoys a rich tradition of performing major choral works, both classical and contemporary, and collaborating in concerts with the Fresno Philharmonic. Singers interested in joining the Fresno Community Chorus Master Chorale should contact Dr. Hamre at 559-278-2539 or by email at
