Attention Academic Departments and Advisors:

Second-Semester Freshmen Advising to Begin Soon

The spring semester is upon us and with it comes the mandatory “Second-Semester Freshman Advising.” This requirement is part of the university’s strategy for fulfilling the chancellor’s initiative for improving the six-year graduation rate. Students need to satisfy this requirement prior to registering for their fall 2015 classes in April.

Freshmen will be informed next week about this requirement through Freshman Connect and an email through GradesFirst. After Census (February 12), registration holds will be applied to the records of all freshmen who have not satisfied the requirement. They are informed of three ways to satisfy their mandatory advising, and they will need to choose one of the following:

1) They may see an advisor in their major or special program (several majors and programs require their students to see them). See the Advising Services website for a complete list.

2) They may attend a one-hour group advising session provided by the Office of Advising Services. (NOTE: This option will not satisfy the requirement for those students who must see their major or special program advisor.) Students may sign up for a workshop at the Advising Services website.

3) They may also do the workshop online through Blackboard. Students may self-enroll by going to “Hot Spots” on Blackboard then enroll into the Freshman Advising workshop. (NOTE: This option will not satisfy the requirement for those students who must see their major or special program advisor.) This option has seven sections and a quiz in the first five. Once the students complete all quizzes they can print out a certificate of completion for their records.

Please see the Advising Services website for further details, including information on how students may sign up for the various workshop options at http://www.fresnostate.edu/studentaffairs/advising/
