Dear Colleagues,

I am very pleased to announce the appointment of Susan Elrod as Dean of the College of Science and Mathematics.

Professor Elrod holds a Ph.D. in Genetics from the University of California-Davis and a B.S. in Biological Sciences from California State University-Chico. Most recently, she served as Executive Director of Project Kaleidoscope (PKAL) at the Association of American Colleges & Universities. In this position, she launched multi-campus, national educational initiatives focused on interdisciplinary learning, sustainability, and STEM student transfer success. She also expanded PKAL’s existing regional STEM faculty networks and enhanced PKAL’s Summer Leadership Institute program for emerging campus leaders.

Susan is a Professor of Biological Sciences at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, and has been a faculty member there since 1997. Among her administrative accomplishments at Cal Poly, Elrod led development of their WASC institutional proposal self-study themes, and served as assistant chair of the Biological Sciences Department, associate dean in the College of Science and Mathematics, and as the director of the Center for Excellence in Science and Mathematics Education (CESaME). At CESaME she was responsible for the growth of the STAR Teacher Researcher program, which is a summer research program for aspiring science and mathematics teachers. She serves on a number of advisory and review boards, and has been an ACE Fellow.

Her wide-ranging and impressive research record includes four patents, recent Project Kaleidoscope grants totaling $4M, and important scholarship that has focused in recent years on facilitating interdisciplinary learning. Susan Elrod brings us the scholarly acumen, dedication to student success, and national prominence to lead the College of Science and Mathematics to great achievements.

She will begin her appointment on January 14. Andrew Hoff will continue his appointment in the College of Science and Mathematics through February, in order to complete RTP and other responsibilities.

Please join me in welcoming Susan Elrod to Fresno State, and thanking the search committee--chaired by Saeed Attar--for conscientious work that's brought us a great result.

Bill
