Flags at half-staff for Peace Officers Memorial Day

To our Fresno State campus community,

In honor of Peace Officers Memorial Day as proclaimed by President Obama, I have directed that the university flags be flown at half-staff Thursday, May 15, as a sign of respect to those in law enforcement who have have lost their lives while serving to protect our communities.

In particular this year, we remember our fallen alumnus, California Highway Patrol Officer Juan Jaime Gonzalez, and his partner Officer Brian Law who died in February while responding to a vehicle accident on Highway 99. Officer Law’s widow, Rebecca, is a graduate student in the Kremen School of Education and Human Development Rehabilitation Counseling Program.

Officer Gonzalez, a 2004 graduate, will be honored at the Latino Commencement Celebration Saturday night at the Save Mart Center. He participated in the Latino Commencement Celebration when he graduated and for many years was a volunteer through his fraternity, Nu Alpha Kappa (NAK).

Additionally, May 11-17 is Police Week and on behalf of the university community, I extend our gratitude and appreciation for the service provided by the officers and staff of the Fresno State Police Department as well as law enforcement forces throughout the nation.
