An innovative opportunity is scheduled for faculty and others to learn about an increasingly popular data analysis approach to use in their research. Joe Hair will present a workshop on the emerging method of Partial Least Squares Structural Equations Modeling (PLS-SEM). This method is a more flexible approach to the traditional covariance-based structural equation modeling, such as that executed using AMOS or LISREL. For example, it does not require data to be normally distributed and in general can be used with non-metrically measured data.

Workshop details are the following:

  • Approach: The dataset from Joe’s new book on PLS-SEM (Sage, 2014) will be used for demonstration purposes. Powerpoint slides with major concepts and instructions will be provided.
  • Most of the workshop will involve “hands-on” analysis of the dataset from his new book using the SmartPLS software. SmartPLS software output diagnostics and proper interpretation of the results will be covered. Potential obstacles and “rules-of-thumb” to ensure appropriate application of the technique will be covered.
  • Who should attend: Individuals wishing to learn the fundamentals of PLS-SEM and the SmartPLS software.
  • Requirement: Participants must bring a laptop with the SmartPLS software loaded. The software is available free from http://www.smartpls.de
