President's Reflections February 11-18, 2013

This has been a full and intense week. Our University community recognized the passing of two individuals who contributed a great deal to the growth of Fresno State: Professor P.J. Mistry and Coach Jim Sweeney. Our thoughts and prayers are with their families.

Congratulations to Dean Paul Beare and the faculty of the Kremen School of Education and Human Development. The school received the Best Practice Award for Professional Ethics and Moral Dispositions in Teacher Education from the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education.

Monday, February 11
My meetings and activities included:
  • Cabinet, at which the issues discussed included access to student records, Bulletin Board communications, follow-up to recent international executive orders and trustee campus visits.
  • Vice-President Paul Oliaro regarding several Student Affairs items.
  • Phone call with an honorary doctorate recipient for 2013.
  • Fresno Rotary Club meeting.
  • Provost William Covino regarding several Academic Affairs items.
  • Academic Senate Executive Committee.
  • Convened meeting of the Fresno Business Council Executive Committee.

Tuesday, February 12
  • Flew to Los Angeles and on to Long Beach to attend meeting of the CSU Council of Presidents. Among the issues discussed were the 2013-14 budget, enrollment targets and collective bargaining issues.
  • Informal dinner with Chancellor Tim White and his wife, Karen.

Wednesday, February 13
  • CSU Council of Presidents, at which the issues addressed included legislative advocacy, Super Sunday programs, Advancement measurement, SB 1440 and online programs.
  • Convened meeting of the Cal State Online Advisory Board. We received reports on the launch programs, reviewed work of Inside Track in delivering services to students, reviewed financial models and discussed several other issues.
  • Attended reception honoring Cal State Online start-up programs at CSU Fullerton, CSU Dominguez Hills and CSU Monterey Bay.

Thursday, February 14
  • Executive leadership of Pearson to discuss a partnership with Cal State Online and review plans for the future.
  • Returned to Fresno.
  • Joined Sharon for a quiet Valentine's Day dinner.

Friday, February 15
  • Associate-Vice President Clint Moffitt to finalize the University's “unrelated business income” tax form.
  • Call with NCAA President Mark Emmert.
  • Athletics Director Thomas Boeh, Deputy Athletics Director Betsy Mosher, Associate Athletics Director for Intercollegiate Services Stephen Robertello, and Faculty Athletics Representatives Dawn Lewis and David Schechter to discuss Athletics compliance issues.
  • Convened luncheon with several faculty members.
  • Athletics Director Boeh on several Athletics issues.
  • President Flo Dunn of the California Health Sciences University.
  • Campus CFA leadership Dr. Lisa Weston, Dr. Kathyrn Forbes and Mr. Brian McNally.
  • Conference call with Vice-Chancellor Gail Brooks regarding collective bargaining issues.
  • Vice-President Cynthia Teniente-Matson to discuss several Administrative Services items.
  • Hosted a group of University supporters for dinner at the University House.

Saturday, February 16
  • Submarine Veterans luncheon, at which the university was thanked for its support.
  • Attended and spoke at the Coach Sweeney Celebration of Life service in Bulldog Stadium.
  • Enjoyed dinner with family in honor of Sharon's birthday.

Sunday, February 17
  • Spoke at Super Sunday service at Westside Church in Fresno
  • Joined family for lunch and a round of golf.

Monday, February 18
  • Flew to Indianapolis to attend NCAA Student Athlete Well Being Committee meeting.
  • Attended dinner meeting of the committee.
