January 14 – 20, 2013

This has been an exciting week as students and faculty return and the campus comes alive again. I look forward to a great semester.

Monday, January 14
My meetings and activities included:
  • Spoke at the annual Spring Faculty and Staff Assembly. A video and transcripts of the presentation can be found at Assembly Video.
  • Congratulations to Jan and Bud Richter Center Director Chris Fiorentino who was awarded the President's Award of Excellence by the University Advisory Board. A very well-deserved recognition.
  • Met with press following the assembly.
  • Vice President Smits to discuss several Advancement items.
  • Presented my “last lecture” at the TILT conference. I was very impressed with the number of our faculty who attended and more importantly the level of engagement by the attendees.
  • Provost William Covino to discuss a number of Academic Affairs items.
  • Attended TILT presentation by Professor Miller from Rutgers University. It was an excellent presentation.
  • Attended TILT conference reception. Congratulations to Rudy Sanchez and his staff for an excellent conference.
  • Several calls concerning an employee issue.
Tuesday, January 15
  • Call with CSU Human Resources Advisory Committee to discuss several HR issues.
  • Conference call concerning an employee issue.
  • California Health Science University President Flo Dunn.
  • Attended and spoke at a presentation by the California Health Care Foundation regarding a study addressing the implementation of the Affordable Care Act in our region. I also attended a reception following the event.
  • Spoke at the campus Lecturers Appreciation Reception.
  • Hosted representatives from the California Health Care Foundation and the CEO of the Fresno Business Council for dinner.
Wednesday, January 16
  • Vice President Paul Oliaro regarding several Student Affairs items.
  • Vice President Cynthia Teniente-Matson regarding Administrative Services matters.
  • KSEE 24 interview concerning Peter Buffett's presentation on February 2.
  • Conference call with the Mountain West Conference Board of Directors to take action to reinstate San Diego State into the conference. This is excellent news for Fresno State and the conference.
  • Flew to Los Angeles to attend CSU Auxiliary Organizations Association Conference. Associate Vice President Debbie Astone is president of the AOA Executive Committee. She has done an excellent job in this role.
  • Introduced Chancellor Tim White at the AOA banquet. He made an excellent presentation.
Thursday, January 17
    Returned to Fresno from Los Angeles.
  • Attended luncheon to thank staff in Admissions Records and Evaluations who devoted extra time and weekend time to get grades posted after our holiday power outage. We are very fortunate to have extraordinary employees like Tina Beddall and her staff.
  • Athletics Director Thomas Boeh on several Athletics items.
  • Interview with a reporter regarding Cal State Online.
  • Fresno Regional Foundation event which announced initial grant awards as a part of their San Joaquin Fund effort.
  • Attended and spoke at meeting of the Sigma Chi alumni group. It was a wonderful evening.
Friday, January 18
  • Flew to Dallas to attend the NCAA convention.
  • Attended a reception for university presidents.
  • Attended annual honors banquet.
Saturday, January 19
  • Attended meeting of NCAA Board of Directors as a representative of the Mountain West Conference. Action was taken to significantly deregulate the rules and try to focus on rules that are important for the integrity of collegiate athletics.
  • Returned to Fresno.
Sunday, January 20
  • Spent some time catching up on paperwork.

Monday, January 21
  • Participated in two conference calls regarding online education in preparation for the upcoming CSU Board of Trustees meeting.
