It is clear from the looks on the faces of students in the library that the end of the semester is coming. The number of visitors in the library also appears to be up. I wish everyone the best as we end classes this week and begin preparations for finals.

Congratulations to the American Chemical Society student chapter which have been selected for a national Outstanding Award for 2011-12. A special “thank you” to Professors Melissa Golden and Joy Goto, advisors to the group.

Monday, December 3
My meetings and activities included:
  • Cabinet, at which the issues addressed included Super Seniors, Association of Public and Land-grant Universities’ Project, degree completion, faculty and staff organization guidelines, analytics, faculty representation on the IRA Committee and Trustee Norton's campus visit.
  • Candidate for the Dean of College of Science and Mathematics position.
  • Provost William Covino to discuss several Academic Affairs items.
  • Vice-President Cynthia Teniente-Matson to discuss several Administrative Services items.
  • Drove to Oakland to attend a meeting of the California Healthcare Foundation Board of Directors.
Tuesday, December 4
  • California Healthcare Foundation Board of Directors.
  • Returned to Fresno in the evening.
Wednesday, December 5
  • Vice-President Paul Oliaro to discuss several Student Affairs items.
  • Associate Vice-President Shirley Armbruster to discuss several University Communications topics and begin preparation for the Spring Faculty and Staff Assembly.
  • Associate Provost Lynnette Zelezny on a couple of issues.
  • Maddy Institute Executive Director Mark Keppler to discuss several items.
  • A group of faculty and administrators to discuss recruitment of underrepresented faculty, staff and administrators. It was a very productive meeting.
  • Convened a teleconference of the Cal State Online Advisory Board.
  • Participated in a teleconference with several CSU presidents to prepare for an upcoming meeting.
  • University Budget Committee to present plans for an allocation of one-time dollars that are available as a result of the passage of Proposition 30. It was a productive discussion.
  • Met with Associated Students, Inc. Vice-President Sean Kiernan.
  • Hosted a dinner at the University House for the trustees of First Tee of Fresno.
Thursday, December 6
  • Convened a meeting of the Information and Educational Technology Coordinating Council. Agenda items included a report from Technology Services, a discussion of the Information Technology Strategic Plan and a presentation on affordable textbook solutions.
  • Area superintendents and community college presidents to discuss Early Start and more effective ways of aligning our requirements for students. It was a very productive meeting, which will lead to several follow-up items.
  • Vice-President Peter Smits to discuss several Advancement items.
  • Hosted our annual Christmas Tree Lane Reception, which featured the Fresno State Marching Band. It was a very enjoyable evening.
Friday, December 7
  • Completed a phone call with university presidents in preparation for the Mountain West Conference Board of Directors meeting.
  • Greeted Assemblymember Kristen Olson who was on campus to receive a briefing on water issues.
  • President's Lunch Group meeting with student leaders.
  • Maddy Institute Board of Directors.
  • Vice-President Smits and Associate Vice-President Kent Clark regarding a major gift solicitation.
  • Visited Fresno Family Counseling Center for a briefing on their work.
  • Hosted dinner for Dr. and Mrs. Vincent and their scholarship awardees at the University House.
Saturday, December 8
  • Fresno State vs. CSU Northridge women's basketball game. It was a great win for Coach Raegan Pebley, her staff and the team.
  • Spoke at the annual Chicano/Latino Christmas Show.
  • Hosted a holiday reception for the Doctoral Program in Educational Leadership students at the University House.
  • Spoke at the Black Faculty and Staff Association's Evening of Elegance scholarship banquet.
Sunday, December 9
Flew to Phoenix to attend Mountain West Conference Board of Directors meeting.
