REFLECTIONS FROM THE PRESIDENT
October 22, 2012

This has been a very different week as I spent almost all of it on the road. It was nice to get home, even for a few hours.

Monday, October 15

  • Played in golf tournament to benefit The First Tee, which serves disadvantaged youth in our region and attempts to teach these students golf as well as life skills. It is a successful national program.
  • Appreciation dinner in Long Beach for Chancellor and Mrs. Charles Reed. It was a very nice evening.

Tuesday, October 16

  • Met with Chancellor Reed and Executive Vice Chancellors Smith and Quillian to discuss online education.
  • Technology Steering Committee meeting at which I made a presentation on Cal State Online.
  • CSU Executive Council. Chancellor-elect Tim White joined us for the day. Issues discussed included 2013-14 budget request, contingencies for aftermath of November election, Cal State Online, technology issues and pension issues as a result of pension reform legislation.
  • Attended informal dinner with Executive Council members.

Wednesday, October 17

  • Executive Council reconvened with legislative issues, a presentation from a start-up firm that will offer an honors experience to community college students, Early Start results, proposed action by the board on the number of hours established for a major and several other issues.
  • Convened meeting of the Cal State Online Advisory Board. Much of the meeting was devoted to a presentation by our partners from Pearson on services they will provide. Seven programs will launch in the spring with an additional five programs in the planning stages.
  • Dinner with an alum who plays a major role in a Los Angeles water agency. It was a very productive evening.
Thursday, October 18

Flew to Orlando, Florida, to participate in a national meeting of the March of Dimes.

Friday, October 19

  • Spoke to the March of Dimes conference about our Central Valley Campaign. I was proud to be able to highlight the work of Dean Luz Gonzalez and her excellent leadership committee in last year’s campaign, and to discuss the success of the effort.

Saturday, October 20

  • Attempted to catch up on accumulated paperwork.
  • Attended a memorial service for Joyce Huggins.
  • Attended the marriage ceremony of Michelle Melikian, administrative assistant in my office, and Joshua Jaccard. It was wonderful event. Congratulations to Michelle and Josh!

Sunday, October 21
