REFLECTIONS FROM THE PRESIDENT
October 8-14, 2012

It is clear that the semester is moving rapidly. The campus is very much alive with activity, and students are studying for exams as I talk with them informally in the library.

Monday, October 8
Among the activities of the day were:

  • Convened a meeting of the Cabinet. Agenda items included a review of the plan for the Budget Information Session, a discussion of Strategic Planning Indicators, International Travel Approval Process and several other issues.
  • Met with Vice President Teniente-Matson and Associate Vice President Moffitt on several budget issues.
  • Met with WASC reviewers who were on campus to review the Doctorate in Educational Leadership.
  • Met with Vice President Teniente-Matson regarding several Administrative Services issues.
  • Attended and spoke at the Budget Information Session held at the Satellite Student Union. Materials presented at the session may be found at: http://www.fresnostatenews.com/budget-central/
  • Attended meeting of the Academic Senate Executive Committee.
  • Attended meeting of the Academic Senate.

Tuesday, October 9

  • Convened meeting of the Fresno Business Council Board of Directors
  • Attended and spoke at a meeting with the Leon S. Peters Foundation Board. We reviewed a number of projects that the Foundation has funded.
  • Met with ASI President Arthur Montejano.
  • Met with Provost Covino regarding a number of Academic Affairs issues.
  • Donated blood at the Central California Blood Center.
  • Attended Lyles Center Next Level announcement at the Smittcamp Alumni House. This will be an excellent new program for the Center.

Wednesday, October 10

  • Stopped by CVELI Conference on school discipline and restorative justice.
  • Met with Vice President Oliaro to discuss a number of Student Affairs issues.
  • Met with Vice President Smits to discuss a number of Advancement issues.
  • Met with Academic Senate Chair Lynn Williams
  • Convened meeting with Faculty Athletic Representatives, Athletics Director Boeh and Deputy Director of Athletics Mosher to discuss several compliance issues.
  • Met with the Fresno Bee Editorial Board to discuss Proposition 30.
  • Met with Vice President Teniente-Matson and Associate Vice President Astone to discuss several Auxiliary Services issues.
  • Attended a fundraiser at the Fresno County EOC for the Deferred Action Center.
  • Attended Central Valley Stock Exchange banquet and received their Stewardship award.
Thursday, October 11

  • Met with five-year performance review committee for Dr. Oliaro.
  • Met with Wellness Advisory Group to discuss launching efforts to reduce obesity on campus and to improve eating habits.
  • Conference call with Business Journal reporter.
  • Met with Associate Vice President Clark, Dean Samiaan and Senior Development Director Jansen to discuss an upcoming meeting with a major donor.
  • Met with Athletics Director Boeh to discuss several Athletics issues.
  • Participated in a conference call with Vice Chancellor Gail Brooks and two other presidents to discuss some CSU System Human Resources issues.
  • Hosted a dinner for the Business Advisory Council and spoke to them on University issues.The Council has some outstanding new members.
Friday, October 12

  • Drove to California State East Bay to attend the investiture ceremony for President Leroy Morishita.
    Flew to Boise, Idaho.
  • Attended a dinner with some major athletics supporters.

Saturday, October 13

  • Attended pre-game tailgate activities.
  • Attended Boise State vs. Fresno State football game. It was a disappointing outcome.
  • Returned to Fresno

Sunday, October 14

  • Played golf with friends and supporters of the University.
  • Attended reception sponsored by the Armenian Studies Program that featured the opening of the exhibit on the 500th anniversary of Armenian Printing in the Madden Library. It's an excellent exhibit. Spoke at the opening of the exhibit.
  • Worked on getting ready for the new week.
