President's Reflections September 25-30, 2012

This week was shorter than usual for me as we took a long weekend in Illinois and did not return to Fresno until Monday evening. However, the rest of the week was full as we celebrated Homecoming weekend.

Tuesday, September 25
My meetings and activities included:

• Vice-President Peter Smits and Associate Vice-President Kent Clark to discuss several campaign prospects.

• Continued prospect meeting with development staff to review specific work in the College of Arts and Humanities, the Jordan College and planned giving.

• Taped a message on the latest budget news. It can be viewed in the Video section of Budget Central (http://www.fresnostatenews.com/budget-central/).

• Participated in the Fresno State On-the-Move event. It was fun to see the many people participating in this walking event.

• New Agricultural Research Initiative Executive Director Mark Shelton.

• Provost William Covino and Dean Vida Samiian.

• Vice-President Smits to discuss several Advancement matters.

• Vice-President Paul Oliaro to discuss several Student Affairs matters.

• Hosted an Open House at the University House for the faculty and staff. It was a very enjoyable evening.

Wednesday, September 26


• Vice-President Cynthia Teniente-Matson to discuss several Administrative Services matters.

• Executive Director of Cal State Online Ruth Black and academic deans to discuss opportunities with Cal State Online.

• Maddy Institute luncheon which featured Mark Baldassare, president and CEO of the Public Policy Institute of California (PPIC).

• Conference call with a vendor interested in providing online lab materials.

• Chair of Academic Senate Lynn Williams.

• Central California Children's Institute Executive Director Cassandra Joubert who has been representing me in community mental health conversations.

• Telephone interview with a New York Times reporter.

• Presentation to a LEAD leadership class.

Thursday, September 27


• Chaired meeting of the Fresno Business Council Executive Committee.

• Representatives of the CSU Retired Faculty Association regarding their interest in affiliating with the campus.

• Tate Hill of the Fresno Metro Black Chamber of Commerce.

• Lunch with Duane Oswald of Oswald Associates, Inc. to discuss community issues.

• Athletics Director Thomas Boeh to discuss a number of athletics matters.

• ASI President Arthur Montejano.

• Senior Development Director Lee Ann Jansen and Associate Development Director Sarah Schmidt to discuss Kremen School prospects.

• Spoke at Tree Fresno's “Welcome Home” event.

• Spoke at the Mass Communication and Journalism Department's Alumni Hall of Fame Induction and Fellows Tribute. Congratulations to Lanny Larson of University Communications, one of the honorees.

Friday, September 28


• Ag Foundation Board of Directors.

• Inauguration of President Peter C. Menjares at Fresno Pacific University.

• Vice-President Teniente-Matson and Associate Vice-President Debbie Astone to discuss a number of Auxiliary matters.

• Bulldog Pride Fund Scholars reception.

• VIP reception for Top Dog honorees.

• Attended and spoke at the Alumni Association's annual Top Dog awards gala. It was a wonderful evening.

Saturday, September 29

• Attended and spoke at the Alumni Association's annual Golden Grad Society event.

• Parents Association tailgate.

• Stopped by several tailgates.

• Hosted Top Dog recipients at the sky box for the Fresno State vs. San Diego State football game. It was an exciting game and a great Bulldog win. Congratulations to Coach DeRuyter, his staff and the team!

Sunday, September 30

• Nice quiet day with time spent with our daughter Anne and the grandkids, who were visiting. Also, time was devoted to prepare for the coming week.
