In memory of Ms. Mireyda “Mia” Barraza Martinez, a teaching associate in the English Department, I have directed that our flags be displayed at half-staff from sunrise to sunset on Tuesday, Nov. 29, the day of her Funeral Mass.

We are saddened by the tragic loss of Mia in a car accident Nov. 20. A 2014 graduate with a bachelor’s degree in English from Fresno State, Mia was also currently enrolled in the Master of Fine Arts Creative Writing Program and was on track to graduate in the spring. She was teaching a poetry writing class this semester and was scheduled for the same class next semester. She also worked as a graduate assistant for U.S. Poet Laureate Juan Felipe Herrera’s in his new Laureate Lab on campus.

A Rosary service and viewing is 4 to 7 p.m. today (Nov. 28), at Myers Funeral Service (248 North E St.) in Porterville. The Funeral Mass will be held at 9 a.m. Tuesday at St. Anne's Parish Church (378 North F St.) followed by interment at Hillcrest Memorial Park Cemetery (1013 E. Olive Ave.) also in Porterville.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Mia’s family, colleagues in the College of Arts and Humanities as well as throughout Fresno State and beyond, and her students. Mia generously served the University community and our larger community and we are grateful she shared her gifts with us.
