President's Reflections July 30-August 11, 2012

The past two weeks have been relatively quiet as many people have chosen to take vacation during this period. However, it is clear by the end of this week that the pace was picking up and the fall semester is right around the corner. The football, soccer and volleyball teams have returned and the marching band has started practice. It will not be long before the entire campus is alive again.

I was deeply saddened to read of the terrible tragedy in Wisconsin. It reminds us once again of how important it is to truly commit ourselves to embracing all cultures in our country.

Congratulations to alumnus Marciano Gutierrez, who has been selected as a Teacher Ambassador fellow in the U.S. Department of Education. He will work on teacher-quality issues. He identified Professors Matthew Jendian, William Skuban and David Schecter as having a huge impact on his life while at Fresno State.

Congratulations to Betsy Mosher, Deputy Director of Athletics, who was selected as Athletics Administrator of the Year by the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletics Administrators. This is a well-deserved honor for Betsy who has been a great leader for our Athletics program.

I was delighted to learn that we are one of four universities chosen by the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities to receive a Minority Male STEM Initiative grant to address the shortage of transfer students pursuing science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) majors. Congratulations to Dean Ram Nunna for his leadership in achieving this $100,000 grant.

Finally, I was very pleased that El Dorado Park was one of two Fresno neighborhoods to receive training and technical assistance through the groundbreaking Building Neighborhood Capacity Program sponsored by the U.S. Department of Justice. We are a partner with the city of Fresno and several other key agencies. This support will allow us to move forward with future plans. A special thank you to Vice President Cynthia Teniente-Matson and her staff for their leadership in this effort. ... g-966.html
