President Joseph I. Castro has proclaimed Friday, April 24, as Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day at Fresno State in recognition of the 100th anniversary of the date when the massacre of 1.5 million Armenians began in the Ottoman Turkish Empire. Gov. Jerry Brown also has proclaimed Friday “A Day of Remembrance of the Armenian Genocide” in the state of California.

President Castro will speak at two public events on campus this week and encourages the campus community to participate:

  • Tonight (April 23), the new Armenian Genocide Monument at Fresno State will be dedicated at 7:30 p.m. at the Maple Mall, just east of the Rose Garden.
  • Friday at noon at the monument, a ceremony is planned by the Armenian Students Organization.

Also on Friday, the carillon in the University Student Union clock tower will provide a tribute. At 19 seconds past noon, the carillon will play “The Bells of Peace” for 15 minutes (to represent the year 1915) in memory of the victims and survivors of the genocide.
