REFLECTIONS FROM THE PRESIDENT

May 6-12, 2013

It hardly seems possible that we have reached finals week. This past week has been a very busy with numerous recognition and Commencement events, and there’s more to come this week.

Monday, May 6
My meetings and activities included:
  • Cabinet, at which the items discussed included 2013-14 enrollment and budget issues, a replacement for retiring Dean Andrew Hoff on the USU Board, vacation schedules and the presidential transition.
  • Vice President Peter Smits to discuss a number of Advancement items.
  • Executive Director of the Wayfinders project, Shail Lopez-Ortiz.
  • Completed an interview with The Collegian staff.
  • Vice President Cynthia Teniente-Matson to discuss a number of Administrative Services items.
  • Craig School of Business golf tournament.
  • Hosted dinner for Academic Senate Executive Committee and committee chairs. Special guests included past Senate chairs since 1991. It was great to have Ron Perry, James Kus, Barbara Birch, Mike Botwin and Michael Caldwell in attendance.

Tuesday, May 7
  • Vice President Paul Oliaro to discuss a number of Student Affairs items.
  • Interview with Warren Armstrong from ABC30.
  • Associated Students, Inc. President Arthur Montejano to discuss ASI issues.
  • Professor Vickie Krenz and students from IMPACT to discuss a proposed revision in the Campus Smoking Policy.
  • Provost William Covino to discuss Academic Affairs items.
  • Conference call with Bowl Championship Series Presidential Oversight Committee for The College Football Playoffs. I represent the Mountain West on this board.
  • Athletics Director Thomas Boeh to discuss several Athletics items.
  • Attended a check presentation to Children's Hospital Central California by our Sigma Chi chapter. Congratulations to Sigma Chi for raising over $16,000 for the hospital.
  • Completed a video shoot for STAR Day.
  • Hosted dinner in honor of the Ernesto Martinez Scholarship Fund to benefit Los Danzantes de Aztlan students.

Wednesday, May 8
  • Conference call with Pearson Vice President Mark Russell to discuss Cal State Online issues.
  • Provost Covino, Vice President Smits, Dean Charles Boyer and several others to review plans for the Jordan Research Facility. Additional monies are needed to enhance the facility for research.
  • Conference call with CSU Presidents, Provosts and Chief Financial Officers to discuss the upcoming May budget revise and potential accountability measures.
  • Attended and spoke at the annual Heritage Society Luncheon.
  • Attended meeting with Associate Provost Zelezny, Cal State Online Executive Director Ruth Black, and several others to review implementation of our new MBA and Homeland Security certificate through Cal State Online. It was a very productive meeting.
  • Cal State Online Executive Director Black.
  • Attended and spoke at Provost’s Awards reception.
  • Fresno Unified School Board meeting to receive a proclamation from the board.
  • With Director Tim Stearns, hosted the Lyles Center year-end awards ceremony at the University House.

Thursday, May 9
  • Information and Educational Technology Coordinating Council to discuss a number of issues including the classroom upgrade, affordable learning solutions and implementation steps for the technology plan.
  • Reception honoring Student Affairs Dean's Medalist nominees.
  • California Health Sciences University Board of Trustees.
  • Met with community member Quay Hays and Director Gil Harootunian to discuss a possible partnership with the Quay Valley project.
  • Integrated Marketing and Communications Council, at which items discussed included a template for certificates, an assessment of the use of the campus name and logo, water tower branding and banners.
  • Attended and spoke at the Department of Nursing Master’s hooding ceremony.
  • Craig School of Business Awards dinner.

Friday, May 10
  • Catholic Professional and Business Club breakfast where Coach Tim DeRuyter spoke.
  • Ag Foundation Board of Directors.
  • Central Valley Public Relations Society of America luncheon to receive Executive of the Year award.
  • College of Health and Human Services Honors Convocation and awarded an Honorary Doctorate to Alan Hurwitz, President of Gallaudet University.
  • Attended and spoke at the Jordan College Faculty and Staff Recognition and Appreciation event.
  • Hosted the annual Pinnacle Society Dinner at the University House.

Saturday, May 11
  • Attended quarterly meeting of the Alumni Association Board of Directors.
  • Continued the packing process at the University House.

Sunday, May 12
  • Enjoyed round of golf with Sharon and absorbed another defeat.
  • Attended dinner with the Cabinet members and their spouses.
