REFLECTIONS FROM THE PRESIDENT

April 8-14, 2013

The month of April is flying by. It is hard to imagine that everyone is beginning to initiate Commencement planning.

Congratulations to Theatre Arts alum Matt McGee who won The James MacArthur Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor, Resident Play at the Helen Hayes Awards (equivalent to the Tony's). In his acceptance speech he praised professors Brad Myers and Leslie Martin for helping him achieve his potential.

Congratulations to Professor K.C. Chen and his students who entered the Student Managed Investment Funds competition nationally. The program finished fourth out of 240 student managed portfolios. The 2012 return was almost 16 percent.

Monday, April 8
My meetings and activities included:
  • Traveled to Atlanta to participate in NCAA activities and attend the NCAA Men's Basketball Championship game.
Tuesday, April 9
  • After struggling with flight changes due to snow in Denver, flew to San Diego.
Wednesday, April 10
  • WASC CEO workshop to discuss changes in accreditation, legislation regarding accreditation, discussed for-profit sector myths and heard from leaders in the MOOC movement.
  • Attended and spoke at a San Diego alumni event.
Thursday, April 11
  • Conference call with Cal State Online Executive Director Ruth Black.
  • Convened meeting of IETCC, at which the topics discussed included a presentation by CSU CIO Bruce Briggs, Technology Services report, technology strategic plan, TILT update and Accessible Technology Initiative.
  • Athletics Director Thomas Boeh regarding several Athletics items.
  • Met with CSU CIO Bruce Briggs.
  • Attended and spoke at the annual Common Threads luncheon, which honors women who are leaders in agriculture.
  • Meeting of Athletics Director Boeh, Associate Director Stephen Robertello and FAR's Dawn Lewis and David Schechter to discuss Athletics compliance issues and proposed NCAA legislation.
  • Conference call with the Maddy Institute Executive Committee.
  • Dr. Jody Hironaka-Juteau and Vice President Cynthia Teniente-Matson to discuss implementation of our diversity plan.
  • Vice President Teniente-Matson to discuss several Administrative Services items.
  • Hosted dinner and spoke at the Business Advisory Council meeting at the University House.
Friday, April 12
  • Attended breakfast meeting of the Catholic Professional and Business Club.
  • Met with an investigator regarding a discrimination complaint.
  • Director Leticia Reyna Cano and Executive Coordinator of Events Rosie Tapia regarding upcoming events.
  • Vice President Peter Smits regarding several Advancement items.
  • President Florence Dunn of the California Health Sciences University.
  • Met with Chancellor Timothy White.
  • Attended the Department of Communication award reception.
Saturday, April 13
  • Played golf with several Fresno State alums.
  • Joined Sharon for a quiet dinner.
Sunday, April 14
  • Attended Fresno State vs. Boise State softball game. It was a great win for Coach Trisha Ford, her staff and the team.
  • Attended the annual Secret Garden Party in support of the Arne Nixon Center.
  • Prepared for the coming week.
