REFLECTIONS FROM THE PRESIDENT

March 11 – March 17, 2013

This has been a busy week.

Congratulations to students, faculty, and staff who raised more than $37,000 for the Children’s Hospital Central California Kids Day. Approximately 1,200 volunteers participated.

Word was received from the Committee on Accreditation of the Commission on Teacher Credentialing that our Reading and Language Arts and Reading certificate credentials were accredited. Congratulations to Dean Paul Beare and all of the faulty involved.

The Communication Department sponsored another great Peach Blossom Festival this week. Congratulations to all of the faculty and staff involved, as well as to College of Arts and Humanities alums and emeriti faculty who served as judges.

Monday, March 11
My meetings and activities included:
  • Cabinet, at which the issues discussed included the 2012-14 enrollment target, Strategic Plan reports, the Strategic Plan for Inclusion, Respect and Equity and working with difficult students.
  • Vice President Paul Oliaro to discuss a number of Student Affairs items.
  • Spoke at the dedication of the Foster Farms Poultry Education and Research facility, the first in the nation to receive certification from American Humane AssociationTM
  • Vice President Cynthia Teniente-Matson on several Administrative Services items.
  • Athletics Director Thomas Boeh on several Athletics items.
  • Provost William Covino regarding Academic Affairs items.
  • Academic Senate Executive Committee meeting.
  • Attended and spoke at a reception honoring the new Consul General of Israel, Dr. Andy David.

Tuesday, March 12
  • Drove to Sacramento with Vice President for University Advancement Dr. Peter Smits to participate in the annual CSU Advocacy Day program. After a presentation on issues by legislative analyst Mac Taylor, we had individual meetings with our local legislators. The meetings were more positive than in previous years.
  • Returned to Fresno in the evening.

Wednesday, March 13
  • Participated in a videotaping for a “Maddy Report” program.
  • Participated in a photo shoot for the upcoming FresnoState Magazine.
  • Professor Emeritus Sudarshan Kapoor.
  • Met with a community member regarding the First Tee program.
  • Met with two alums.
  • Met with Dr. Jody Hironaka-Juteau about Inclusion, Respect and Equity Plan implementation.
  • Met with President Flo Dunn of the California Health Sciences University.
  • Attended and spoke at the retirement reception for Vivian Franco.
  • Met with Dean Robert Harper and the chair of ASCB accreditation team for the Craig School of Business.

Thursday, March 14
  • Drove to San Francisco State University to attend the investiture of President Les Wong. It was a beautiful ceremony and a great day for that university.
  • Flew to Las Vegas for the Mountain West tournament.
  • Joined Athletics Director Boeh and Vice President Oliaro for a late dinner after a victory by the women's basketball team.

Friday, March 15
  • Mountain West Board of Directors meeting. It was the first meeting of the board with all members in attendance and also a very substantive meeting.
  • Attended Fresno State vs. Wyoming women's semi-final basketball game. It was a great game with a storybook ending. Congratulations to Coach Raegan Pebley, her staff and the team for a great win.
  • Joined Fresno State fans for dinner.

Saturday, March 16
  • Spent a significant part of the day catching up on email and other paperwork.
  • Joined major donors, Athletic Director Boeh and others for dinner.
  • Attended the Mountain West women's basketball championship game. What a great evening as the Bulldogs defeated San Diego State for the conference championship. Congratulations to Coach Pebley, her staff and the team. It was a fearless performance.
  • Returned to Fresno.

Sunday, March 17
  • Happy St. Patrick 's Day!
  • Attended a donor reception at the new Gibson Farm Market, which will officially open on March 18. It is a great facility!
  • Attended and spoke at the annual Armenian Studies banquet. We are very fortunate to have great community support for this program.
  • Welcomed the Mountain West women's basketball champions home from Las Vegas. A tired but happy group!

It is time for a new week!
