Assistant Professor of Voice – Fresno State
Born in Moscow, Russia where she received her initial music training in piano and choral conducting, Maria Briggs moved to Australia at the age of 14. It is there that she completed her studies in piano and vocal performance. She completed her Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Vocal Performance at the University of Sydney in 2015. She researched opera training in Australia and the UK. Her published thesis can be viewed here.
Dr. Briggs has sung with Opera Australia, Pacific Opera, Lyric Opera Weimar, and the Glyndebourne Opera Festival, UK. She is a multiple prizewinner of Australian National and International opera competitions. Dr. Briggs was the winner of MIETTA recital award in 2008 and received her prize from Maestro Richard Bonynge. She is well known as a superb recitalist and champion of contemporary repertoire. Dr. Briggs has recorded new Australian works for voice and small ensemble with ABC Classic FM radio and frequently sings in live radio broadcasts and has made her television debut in 2010 in I Spry – The Rise and Fall of a Master Spy, ABC Television playing the role of a Russian singer.
Dr. Briggs is a passionate music educator, having directed the Australian Youth Choir for 5 years. She has been a lecturer at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music since 2014. In addition, Dr. Briggs directs the Marianna Ensemble – an art quartet that performs her original works as well as works by other contemporary composers. Her song Lullaby was the winner of the Australian National Song Competition in 2008. In addition, her songs were selected for the APRA Song Summit conferences in 2010 and 2012.
