Professional Development Courses
The Department of Modern and Classical Languages and Literatures (MCLL), in coordination with the College of Arts and Humanities (CAH), will offer Professional Development Programs for Spanish and Bilingual teachers during the 2019-2020 school year. We will work across the disciplines to give teachers the opportunity not only to maintain and improve their knowledge of the language they teach, but also to increase their general knowledge. All the instruction and materials we will provide to the teachers for their own growth, can also be used to help instruct their students. Our Professional Development courses will give the teachers of our region the opportunity to increase the mastery of the language they teach by exposing them to art, music, journalism, medical professions, business, marketing, and other disciplines.
MEDICAL TRANSLATION AND INTERPRETATION

The medical translation and interpretation course is comprised principally of presentations and activities designed to teach medical vocabulary in a simple and practical way for students. On the one hand, the presentations will cover every one of the systems and structures of the human body, from bones and muscles to organs; as well as common conditions in every specialized field of medicine. The students will obtain a foundational vocabulary in anatomy, physiology, and biology, all in a bilingual context. On the other hand, the exercises will be based on actual visits to medical centers and hospitals so that students can learn in a pragmatic way and thereby be prepared to apply what they have learned into real-world settings or to study at a university level. This course will provide a solid foundation to become a bilingual speaker with knowledge of medical vocabulary, whether a student wishes to find a job in the medical field or to become a medical interpreter. This course will be conducted by lecturer Marc Tamarit (CSU, Fresno) in Spanish.
SPANISH LITERATURE: RENAISSANCE TO BAROQUE
Presented by: María Dolores Morillo López, María Elvira Hernández
This course will offer the participants an opportunity to familiarize themselves with and further their understanding of some of the most representative literary works and authors of the Spanish Renaissance and Baroque periods included in the AP Spanish Literature Curriculum. This course will examine the main characteristics of each text as well as the cultural contexts in which they were produced. Participants will learn how to analyze these works and will receive pedagogical resources on how to teach them successfully and appropriately at the High School level. This course will be conducted by Prof. María Dolores Morillo (CSU, Fresno) in Spanish.
The selected texts are as follows: Lazarillo de Tormes (Anonymous), Garcilaso de la Vega’s “En tanto que de rosa y azucena”, Cervantes’s Don Quijote de la Mancha, Tirso de Molina’s El burlador de Sevilla”, Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz’s “Hombres necios”.
