Teaching Credential Program

English/Speech

All students who obtain an English with Speech Emphasis Single Subject Teaching Credential will be eligible to teach grades 7-12. In most cases, students will be teaching both English and Speech courses.

English Single Subject Teaching Credential

The following 24 units are required of all English credential majors, regardless of extended studies emphasis.

Required courses

ENGL 131 (4 units)
LING 146 (3 units)
LING 141 (3 units)
DRAMA 138A (3 units)
COMM 103, 105, 114, or 115 (3 units)
ENGL 193T or 194T (4 units)
Literature of Diversity (4 units)
Select one approved course: ENGL 112, 113, 114, 179, 193T (selected topics), 194T

Total (24 units)

Speech Emphasis (15 units)

Select two: COMM 3, 5, 7, 8 (6 units)
Select two: COMM 108, 162, 164 (6 units)
Select any upper-division speech course not used in previous electives (3 units)

Total (15 units)

Students wishing to pursue a course of study leading to a teaching credential should see the departmental director of teacher education for advising early in their programs as state requirements change frequently.
