CITI provides learners with information about historical events leading to the development of human subjects protections, human subjects research regulations, and ethical guidelines for conducting research involving human subjects.

Once registered, add the most applicable course to your queue. Available CITI Human Subjects Protection courses include the following:

Social & Behavioral Research Investigators: Choose this group to satisfy CITI training requirements for investigators and staff involved primarily in social and behavioral research with human subjects.
Biomedical Research Investigators: Choose this group to satisfy CITI training requirements for investigators and staff involved primarily in biomedical research with human subjects.
Research with data or laboratory specimens- ONLY: No direct contact with human subjects.
IRB Members: This Basic Course is appropriate for IRB or Ethics Committee members.

CITI will issue a completion report once you finish the required course.

Frequently Asked Questions

All persons directly involved in human subjects research (i.e., individuals who will have contact with human subjects, with confidential data about human subjects, or with data that will be obtained from human subjects) must complete human subjects protection training on the CITI Program website. IRB approval of any application is contingent upon the completion of this mandatory online training.

Yes, CITI will issue a Completion Certificate/Report once you finish the mandatory course.

CITI Human Subjects Protection Training is valid for three years. All persons conducting research with human study participants must renew certification every three years by taking the CITI refresher course.
